9 Million Americans Self-Identify as Mixed-Race

Recently a Cheerios ad featuring an interracial couple and a mixed-race child received backlash on the internet from people who found the portrayal somehow offensive.

Let’s put this into perspective for just a moment. There are now 9 million people who checked two or more boxes in the race section of the U.S. Census as of 2010. There are 38 states in the union that have a smaller population than 9 million.

Cheerios is standing by the commercial, despite the volumes of complaints they received.
