How Many Same-Sex Marriages in the United States?

Today the Supreme Court issued two rulings that dramatically affected the standing of same-sex marriages nation wide. Our Daily Snippet: There are at least 71,165 same-sex marriages in the United States, probably more, according to the Pew Research Center.

In one ruling, SCOTUS overturned section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), giving federal benefits to same-sex married couples, the same ones heterosexual married couples already receive.

The other ruling of the Court dismissed the challenge to the district court ruling over California’s Prop 8, leaving the law void for the time being, presumably allowing same-sex marriages in California.
