According to Sabrina Tavernise over at the New York Times, who cites the Brookings Institute, married couples represented 48% of American households in 2010. That number is way below the 78% of households occupied by married couples in 1950. Additionally, only a fifth of households represented the traditional family (mother, father and children) compared to 48% in 1950.
