Today we honor National Fruit and Vegetable Month with this Daily Snippet: Like its cousin the potato, the tomato is originally from South America. Now I’m wondering what Italians did for food before the 17th century (j/k). We have some more interesting tomato facts in the infographic below.
For example, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that the tomato is a vegetable in 1893 (NIX v. HEDDEN, 149 U.S. 304).
That explains, at least in part, why Congress could later (recently) declare Pizza a vegetable. Oy vey.
