What’s a Google?

Happy 15th birthday to Google today. Google is actually a play on the word Googol, which is the number 1 followed by 100 zeros (or 10^100). The idea: the founders wanted to accumulate a seemingly infinite amount of information on the Internet. It would appear they succeeded.

Google is the most visited website in the world.

According to Alexa, Google tops the list, followed by Facebook, Youtube, and Yahoo.

It all started with two men, Larry Page  and Sergey Brin in 1995 at Stanford. Google is registered as a domain in September in 1997, but things really get started in 1998 when they incorporate in California.

Today, Google is a multifaceted company with hands in a variety of arms of the technology world, including ownership of the popular Android operating system on most non-Apple phones. Google’s market cap is at $292 billion today.
